Avenue of the Flags

One of my favorite service projects our pack participates in is West Newton Avenue of the Flags.

Every year for Memorial day volunteers get together to put over 350 full sized flags up at West Newton Cemetery. There is a job for everyone. They need some strong adults to help set the flag poles into the holes along the road. The not quite as strong (or quite as tall) cub scouts are perfect for unfolding the flags, clasping them to the poles and keeping them keeping them up off the ground until the poles are lifted into place. The smallest of our pack can hold onto the clasps, bolts and plaques so they don’t get lost.

Not only is this a rewarding way to honor our veterans through a service project, it is truly breathtaking to see all those flags waving through the cemetery.

On May 11th we are helping with raising the flags.

On June 1st, we go back to help take all the flags back down.

  • Some helpful tools to bring to attach the memorial plaques are:
  •  Screwdriver
  • Adjustable pliers
  • 3/8th and 7/16th or adjustable wrench
  • Coffee and doughnuts are provided in the morning. Pizza is available for lunch afterward.

Our cub scouts get a lot of practice that day learning to fold the American flag.

Again the day starts at 9am and last about 3 hours.

Donuts and pizza are provided. Please bring the same tools if you are able.

Please sign up for this event through this Sign up Genius Link.

Wear your Class B t shirts to this event. Make sure you are looking good. The news station make a habit of showing up to this event and who can resist taking a picture of a bunch of cute cub scouts honoring our country.
